This report presents a comprehensive overview of the schooling provided to more than 3.1 million students in approximately 10 000 primary and secondary schools in Australia's eight States and Territories during 1995. The report begins with the common and agreed national goals of schooling which provide guidelines for schools and systems in developing objectives and strategies in the areas of curriculum and assessment. The report then provides a national overview of Australian schooling, including information about the context of Australian schooling, resources, teachers and teaching, vocational education, quality and educational effectiveness. The second section contains reports from each of the States and Territories about their specific objectives for 1995. Special focus is given in this issue to vocational education, gender education and achievement of gender equity, literacy, and physical development and health.
